10 Reasons
Why GM Foods Won't
Feed the World

Saturday, October 16th, was World Food Day.  Indiana's Millions Against Monsanto group held an event near Indianapolis featuring guest speakers Mark Cox and Moe Parr and a viewing of The Future of Food.

Here's a video of the speakers:

October is
Non-GMO Month!

Most of you have heard us talk about genetically modified organisms on many occasions.  For those of you that our newer and are not familiar, here is a brief description.  Scientists have figured out how to insert genetic material from one organism into the permanent genetic code of another.  These are then patented and sold as seed to farmers.  Some common GM crops are corn, soybeans, cotton, and canola.  The goal of the genetically modified seed is to resistant to something.  For example, GM corn is 'Roundup Ready', meaning it is supposed to be resistant to Roundup and, therefore, farmers can spray the herbicide to kill the weeds and not hurt the corn.  GM cotton is supposed to be resistant to a number of common cotton pests.  While the idea is understandable, there are a number of risks involved.  There is growing evidence of environmental and health problems.

I guess that's about as 'brief' as I can get on this subject!  There are a number of excellent websites on the subject, so here are some links to some instead of continuing with the information myself.

One last point: Non-GMO Month is about labeling.  We believe we have the right to choose whether or not we are consuming genetically modified foods.  We have a right to know what is in our food.  Simple.
